American Society for News Excellence

American Society of News Excellence

The American Society of News Editors has entered its second century. The media world at the society's birth in 1923 was of course a dramatically different place. Radio was in its infancy, television was decades away from commercial use and when you referred to "freedom of the press," you literally meant something printed on a press.

In its second century, ASNE has been renamed the American Society for News Excellence and is based at Middle Tennessee State University. Gone are the conventions and annual dues. In their stead are resources, news and programs for those engaged in informing the public, regardless of platform or professional status.

A quick overview of what ASNE offers:

ASNE supports the First Amendment through its long-running 1 for All campaign

The 1 for All campaign in support of First Amendment freedoms through media and marketing was founded by ASNE in 2007 with the support of the Knight Foundation. It is run in partnership with the Free Speech Center at MTSU, which has overseen the program for the past six years.
