speak on public issues, reaffirming that the First Amendment protects
controversial political speech.
New York Times Co. v. United States (1971), also called the “Pentagon
Papers” case, defended the First Amendment right of free press against
prior restraint by the government.
Watts v. United States (1969) determined that the First Amendment does not
protect true threats but that a threat made against President Johnson was
political hyperbole.
